The power of coaching: Developing leaders and beyonds

1 COACHING IN HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND HIGHER EDUCATION

Over the past few decades, the use of coaching for career development has become more common in higher education. In the health profession setting, coaching initiatives in medical schools across the country have proliferated with a focus on professional coaching, executive leadership, career coaching for faculty, and academic coaching for trainees.1-3 However, there is a scarcity of studies on coaching for career development in the oral health professions education literature compared to the number of studies available on coaching for career development in medical education. Thus, further research on the value of coaching in dental education is imperative.

Different from mentoring (Table 1), coaching is an evidence-based tool to help individuals navigate career and life decisions. Coaching offers a supportive partnership in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires one to maximize their personal and professional potential.4
